Description Green Grants, a Canadian community greening program sponsored by Walmart Canada and led by Evergreen, is the largest program of its kind nationwide, providing funding to groups introducing or enhancing local community green space. Walmart has committed $2.5 million to Evergreen to help green communities across Canada through the program.

The Green Grants program provides funds of up to $10,000 to local groups working on urban naturalization projects that use native plants to restore and steward woodlands, meadows, wetlands and ravines. This grant program also supports community food gardening projects on publicly accessible lands.

Issuing Notes To be eligible, projects must provide community members with ongoing hands on opportunities to restore and care for local ecosystems including:
  • planting native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants
  • creating community gardens using native plant species (food gardening projects will also be considered if the project addresses broader environmental issues)
  • stewardship activities such as invasive-species removal, mulching and site maintenance
  • monitoring, such as plant survival rates and wildlife species observed
  • public education, such as site tours and installing interpretive signage
